This project was part of a week long 1st grade art camp at Nueva Summer. For this lesson students were introduced to the history of the discovery of the Altamira cave paintings which were discovered by a young girl who was exploring the caves with her father. After looking through a series of slides of cave paintings from around the world the campers were invited to make their own “prehistoric drawings” using chalk pastel. Students were encouraged to include images from their own experience or to draw inspiration from the cave paintings we looked at and discussed during the slide presentation.
